Photography vs Videography
Wedding Photography and Videography are two very different arts; both extremely important elements of any wedding day, but two very diverse roles.
Photographers are emplyed to capture formal and/or reportage coverage to still imagery. Photographers usually meet with you prior to the day in order to discuss requirements, many specialise in only formal photography, and many specialise on only reportage photography (capturing the day as it happens, in an artistic, informal way). They will usually spend time on the day setting shots up with you and your guests, and act as a manager, guiding you through the photo-call. Good photographers will be able to do this in a fun and enjoyable way, and be able to work alongside your other suppliers such as videographers. Beware however, some photographers are unwilling to work with videographers, and some even restrict your guests from taking photos of their own.
Good videographers will meet with you prior to the day to discuss your requirements. They should be able to capture the day to film as discreetely as possible, without moving around too much, or being too 'in your face'. It would be wise to consider the number of cameras (the more, the better - meaning more angles can be captured without the camera operator moving around during your service), the style of video (some shoot very basic, traditional style and some offer contemporary, stylish and modern film) and the cost. Some companies offer basic services from £300, ranging up to over £2,000. Bear in mind this difference in cost will represent a difference in quality. Regardless, good videographers should be able to work alongside your photographer, and should be able to follow the day exactly as it happens without getting in your way or disrupting any element of the wedding.
Always be sure that your photographer is happy to work alongside your videographer and vice versa. It is always good practice to contact both and have them exchange details, this is particularly important as video companies do need to know where photographers will be situated and vice versa.
